Lights Out, Saving the Night – Marnie Ogg
For many years I’ve been talking about dark skies, light pollution, wildlife and our connection with the night, so having the chance to turn that passion into a book for children was enormous fun. It gave me the opportunity to explain some of the science, share the wonder of the night, and show young readers that the way we use light really can make a difference.
The book is written for children aged around 8–12, but it is very much one that adults can enjoy too. It is beautifully illustrated in full colour and explores everything from stars and nocturnal animals to the effects of artificial light and some simple things we can all do to help protect the night.
Published by CSIRO there are also accompanying teacher notes, making it useful for classrooms, libraries and anyone wanting to explore light pollution, astronomy, wildlife and environmental action in more depth.
More than anything, I hope Lights Out helps children (of all ages) look up, notice the night around them, and feel that protecting darkness is something they can be part of.
