Lord Howe Island Dark Sky Festival - Dark Sky Tourism

Lord Howe Island Dark Sky Festival

Nestled in the Tasman Sea, more than 600 kilometres from mainland Australia, Lord Howe Island is renowned for its pristine natural beauty, UNESCO World Heritage status, and extraordinary biodiversity. Yet one of its greatest assets emerges after sunset: darkness.

With minimal artificial light, spectacular night skies, and a community deeply connected to its natural environment, Lord Howe Island has rapidly become a beacon for dark sky engagement and astrotourism in Australia.

The Lord Howe Island Dark Sky Festival began with a simple conversation between Danielle Nicolson of Love Lord Howe and myself. What started as an ambitious idea to celebrate the island’s unique night-time environment was tentatively launched as a pilot event in 2025.

In its 2nd year of the festival 2026 showcased the remarkable potential of combining science, culture, conservation, tourism, and community engagement under the stars. Country music legend James Blundell serenaded audiences at the festival opening, setting the tone for a week-long celebration of the night sky and island life. Attendance tripled from one year to the next, extending the season on Lord Howe and bringing a new and different nature based tourist to the island.

Over the course of the festival, visitors enjoyed an immersive program featuring astronomy talks by Fred Watson, stargazing experiences, astrophotography workshops, environmental education activities, and eco-tourism experiences. Guided walks with renowned naturalist Ian Hutton offered unique opportunities to explore the island’s extraordinary ecology by day while discovering the importance of preserving darkness by night.

The Lord Howe Island Dark Sky Festival stands as an inspiring example of how a remote island community can leverage one of its most precious natural resources—the night sky—to create a distinctive tourism offering with global appeal.

As both a speaker and tour leader, I look forward to returning to the festival and once again bringing a passionate group of travellers to this exceptional dark sky destination. Lord Howe Island continues to demonstrate that some of the world’s most remarkable experiences happen after sunset, beneath a sky filled with stars.

“Marnie Ogg has been instrumental in the development and growth of the Dark Sky Festival on Lord Howe Island. The Committee greatly values her expertise, guidance and strategic insights which have helped strengthen the Festival’s program and enhance its appeal as a tourism drawcard during the Island’s quieter shoulder season. Marnie brings together a strong commitment to dark sky conservation with a deep understanding of regional communities, enabling her to assist others id developing initiatives that are both environmentally responsible and economically beneficial.”
