Guinness World Record records brightening skies

What started as an ambitious attempt to break a Guinness World Record unexpectedly became something far more important — a powerful piece of citizen science highlighting just how quickly our night skies are disappearing beneath artificial light.

With only six weeks to pull the entire campaign together, the Australasian Dark Sky Alliance mobilised communities, schools, astronomers and citizen scientists across the country to participate in coordinated night sky observations. In my role as Outreach Manager for ADSA, it was extraordinary to witness how many people wanted to engage once they understood what was at stake.

Not only did we successfully achieve the world record, but the data collected contributed to growing global evidence showing that night skies are getting brighter at a much faster rate than previously understood.

For me, that project perfectly captured the power of public engagement. People care deeply once they realise the stars are not guaranteed — and that darkness itself is something worth protecting.
